Sodom the Quintessence of Debauchery Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2026 Surgeons Hall

Sodom, The Quintessence of Debauchery

5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Written in 1673 by John Wilmot the Earl of Rochester

This restoration farce was banned for over 350 years due to its spectacular filth. When the show opens with the cast sitting round a giant erect phallus you know it’s going to be quite a ride.

King Bolloxion has decreed the use of the cunt outlawed much to the women and Queen Cuntigratas’s anger as a dildo doesn’t quite fit the space a prick leaves. After so long using a supplement two of the finest specimens would be like clangers inside a bell.

This excellent production makes the most of the comedy with many a huge floppy dildo on display. It’s an adult Pantomime directed with flair.

There is superb gender switching of cast, heightening the comedy when older sisters commit incest with their younger brother, if you are in the front row, you might get hit with his sperm. It may sound lewd—and it is—but it is delivered with such precise timing that the audience were in hysterics.

The text used in the play is the original in its entirety, cleverly adding more modern songs and metal style drumming to heighten the sex and comedy.

There is a full band on stage which for the fringe is wonderful to see and they really do add atmosphere.

The cast are an ensemble and are obviously loving the play, as it’s performed with relish by everyone of them.

In the words of Johnny Depp playing John Wilmot,

“I put it round, you know. And you will watch me putting it around and sigh for it”

“So gentlemen still your cheesy erections”

And get a ticket for the bawdiest show at the Fringe this year, I can promise you won’t regret it.
