Bottoming for Jesus

4⭐⭐⭐⭐

Join Michael R Speciale as he welcomes us to his church, led by Saint Judy Garland.

Michael starts the cabaret confession by singing, When you’re Smiling. Although he wasn’t always smiling, join him on his journey of self-discovery as he asks himself why.

We are asked to join him on his own spiritual douche.

Michael joined the Mormon Church when he was 15 and no one asked why and more importantly no one persuaded him against it. Even though he was obviously gay he was never told to avoid the homophobic church. Although while there he managed to receive his first sexual encounter, Jeremiah Ginn who was playing the keys and musical director of the show, so it must have been good!

Once he left the church, he found himself in the night clubs and dark rooms of Berlin, using apps like Grindr and Scruff looking for anonymous sex. Leading him to question his very existence. He wrote a song called Why Didn’t My Momma Abort Me. This starts humorous but becomes heart wrenchingly sad as it goes on.

He goes on to end with the Mormon hymn Nearer My God to Thee re-written as Nearer Myself To Me.

The absolute joy of the show is Michael, he can sing, tell stories many of which are difficult to hear but he tells everything with a genuine glint in his eye. The naughtiness is filthy enough to keep you laughing, but there is real heart in his writing.

I hope I can take his message of No more seeking to fill , These holes of mine.

And be nearer myself to me!
