Playback review Edinburgh Fringe 2026 Summerhall
Playback
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Entrance music to this play is Get Right Back to Where We Started From. Setting the scene perfectly for a play going back to 2013 when Euan Munro started his YouTube channel. A 12 year old producing lifestyle and comedy sketch videos to his 130 subscribers from his bedroom in Scotland.
It all starts fairly funny, but some of the comments are creepy. One man willing to pay $50 for feet pics.
In to this mix of comments comes Bill with handle Billosaurus who gives safety advice, saying to watch out for predatory messages and inform his parents. Has many more followers and helps Euan's channel get far more traction. He also messages almost daily.
Unfortunately there is an underlying reason for a 53 year old man speaking to a young boy.
This play is performed extremely well with RCS graduate Euan Munro playing himself growing up on the Web.
Using pre-recorded Skype messaging with a friend and actual videos released on his channel we see him grow up in real time, becoming a 24 year old who still has anxiety over the messages received.
With the current debate about limiting social media to children under 16 and the ban coming in early next year, it’s a play every parent should see along with their children.
At a young age being online getting followers and likes feels like validation. Especially if you are on the fringes of friend groups, often "friends" online feel like all you have. Some of these conversations can turn into long-term anxiety as Munro demonstrates.
This play was listed for the David Maclennan, Co-founder of Wildcat Theatre Company, Award. I hope it has a life after the Fringe run ends.
